Five Questions with EPOWERdoc's Marcel Pertile

We couldn't do this without a dedicated team. To help you get to know these staff members a little bit better, we periodically offer you our "Five Questions" series. This post is a conversation with applications developer Marcel Pertile.
EPOWERdoc: How did you get into health IT and how long have you worked at EPOWERdoc?
Marcel: EPOWERdoc has been a bookend for me. I started my career in development here 6 years ago. I left for a period of time to develop a wider breadth of development experience and then returned about two years ago. I've always been interested in IT and health IT offers an environment that is constantly evolving and I enjoy that.
E: What makes EPOWERdoc and its suite of solutions different/better/unique in a crowded marketplace?
M: In every aspect of what we do, we benefit from the fact that our leadership team has practical experience in the Emergency Department. As physicians and care providers in that environment, they can offer valuable insight on specific aspects of our product offerings. This allows us to provide a high level of client-specific customization of our forms and applications. This offers an ease-of-use experience that is unmatched for hospital-based Emergency Departments and Freestanding Emergency Clinics.
E: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
M: Our leadership encourages us to always dig deeper to improve our products. This motivates me -- and give me the freedom -- to research and use new technologies that improve security and application efficiency. Being empowered to identify and employ best practices is incredibly rewarding.
E: What excites you most about the future of health IT?
M: I love that it moves so fast and, as a result, there is no limit to what we can do. We will always have health care so there will always be an opportunity to improve the services we are providing Emergency Departments, so they, in turn, can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their care. As technology continues to evolve, we have a tremendous opportunity to improve care.
E: While you have no direct interaction with patients, do you feel like you have an impact on delivering quality care? If so, how?
M: YES! Our product is so well designed that it can help a doctor/nurse avoid mistakes. It is also fast and simple to use which allows the care team to remain focused on the patient.
