We have had 2 prior EMRs over the past 12-15 years. We now use EPD and find it is by far the most intuitive and does not require extensive training for new hires. We have researched many different systems prior to our selection. Most of the “integrated systems” are not at all well suited for the unique environment in the ED. We found too many compromises to fulfill our needs. Our major goal was to get a system designed for the ED environment that communicates with the hospital-wide system. EPD seems to have done that. EPD is also customizable enough to allow for site specific needs. Some of the “integrated systems” have a take it or leave it approach.
With EPD we saw an increase in patients per hour because we spend less time documenting and more at the bedside or making medical decisions rather than navigating a series of drop boxes present with many EMRs.
